The school-to-prison pipeline does not begin in court.
It can begin through ordinary decisions about behavior, documentation, exclusion, restraint, referral, family communication, and lack of access to opportunity.
A single decision may not appear life-changing by itself. But repeated labels, records, removals, and referrals can shape how a child is viewed, what opportunities remain available, and whether another system becomes involved.

The Core Belief
Schools should be safe havens, not pre-correctional environments.
A child should not become a record before they are seen as a person.
School safety and accountability matter. But safety cannot depend on practices that unnecessarily label, exclude, humiliate, restrain, or criminalize young people.
The goal is not to remove accountability. The goal is to ensure that accountability is fair, informed, proportionate, developmentally appropriate, and connected to a young person’s future.
